Note to self, befriend a copywriter.

Note to users: Here is how to get the Link to Your Content icon to appear again if it has gone missing.

Created out of a need for clients to link to PDFs inline in copy came the simple origins of the Link to Your Content plugin. From those meager origins came the need to be able to link to content created and/or uploaded across a multi-site network. In time the Link to Your Content plugin matured into the publicly available version you can download below.

But before you do that, you might want to actually know what it does. As the name suggests it allows you to link to the content you have in WordPress by adding a new button to TinyMCE. Working on both single and multi-site installs this plugin allows you to link to:

  • Posts
  • Pages
  • Uploaded documents
  • Uploaded images
  • Custom Post Types (optional)
  • Taxonomies (optional)
  • Content across a multi-site network (optional)

Simple, easy to use, this plugin is for anyone who wants to:

Download the Link to Your Content plugin and get started today.

    hi there,
this would be awesome if i could get it to work!
i’ve installed it, and the icon has appeared on my TinyMCE, the window pops up when you click on the icon, i can see all my posts/pages/docs/images, i can select an item… and that’s where it all falls over and i don’t know why!
LTMC just will not insert the link, regardless of whether i put anything in the title field or not (i was trying it with text already selected, assuming that LTMC would assume the selected text to be the title).
any ideas on why this is not functioning?
    thanks heaps!

Nothing comes immediately to mind except version 1.0 of the plugin did go out with a few bugs that were fixed in 1.1 Beyond that I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. Are you using any other plugins that add buttons to TinyMCE or that might be causing a conflict? And for reference what content are you having trouble linking to or is it everything?

Thanks for trying to use the plugin at least. I will see if there is anything else I can figure out.

    • bruce

yeah, i have 2 other plugins which add buttons to TinyMCE.
Post Snippets, which acts as a kind of ‘text macro’ tool.
And SlidePress, which is interfaces with SlideShowPro Director, for image management.
and it affects ALL content. i can’t get the plugin to link to a post, to a page, to an image… nothing.
i click the LTMC button, the window pops up, i select the post i want to link to, i click on ‘insert’, the tab (firefox 3.6.13) breifly changes to say that it’s doing something, but the LTMC window doesn’t go away, and no link is inserted around my selected text.
      strange.

    • bruce

oops, sorry. i lie. image linking DOES work, but it’s posts and pages that i’m more interested in, and niether of them works.

      • maymond Post author

Ok, that sounds like the error I found this afternoon. Posts and pages weren’t working while documents and images were. I pushed an update to the plugin earlier today which you can download from the WordPress repository, v1.4, and that should hopefully fix your issue.

  2. bruce

nope. sorry to say it, but verison 1.4 is still linking to images, but not to pages or posts. don’t know about docs, as i don’t have any.

    • maymond Post author

Dang. Back to it then. As previously commented I was able to recreate the exact behavior you are seeing, in IE 7 at least, but v1.4 cleared up the issue in that instance.

Thanks for the additional info though, if you could list any other plugins you are using that would help. I don’t think its a plugin conflict as you can link to images but it wouldn’t hurt to try and mimic your setup and rule that out.

        dude,
i owe you a huge apology.
it turns out that here at home, your plugin works just fine!
but from my workplace, it doesn’t work for posts/pages.
        dunno why.
running windows 7 in both places.
although running chrome browser at home, as opposed to firefox at work.
        sorry for stuffing you around.
        cheers.

        • maymond Post author

No worries. I did find a bug that needed fixing so all was not for naught. Still is weird that it wouldn’t work for you in Firefox. 3.6.13 is an older version but it shouldn’t be causing and problems like what you were seeing. Especially since it works for images. Either way, something for me to keep in mind moving forward. Glad the plugin is working for you.

    I love this plugin.
I have uploaded PDF files into WP_Content folder.
When I go to “Docs”, nothing is there.
Where should I store my PDFs? OR, am I doing something wrong?

    Thank you.

    • maymond Post author

Glad you like it. To get them to show up the PDFs should be uploaded through WordPress so they have a record created for them in the database as the plugin reads from there and not what is in the directory.

      • Quarantined

So I cannot get to files on my site except those that have been uploaded thru WP?

The plugin, then, is useful to seperate images, docs, ect, rather than sort thru the Media storage in WP?

        Thank you.

        • maymond Post author

Right, anything that has been uploaded through WordPress will show up in the plugin so you can link to it that way rather than getting the link from the Media Library.

  4. jmarcus

Docs and Images tabs don’t work. There is an error under the taxonomies tab if I turn it on:

Catchable fatal error: Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-content\plugins\link-to-your-content\link_to_your_content.php on line 554

    • maymond Post author

Sorry to hear its not working for you. Can you give me a little more information to better track down and hopefully fix the issue. What version of WP are you running? Is is a single or multi-site install? Do you have any custom taxonomies? If so are any hierarchical? How were they created, by hand or a specific plugin or theme? And just out of curiosity what version of the plugin are you using?

      Thanks.

  5. Keithcurtis

I’m in the process of converting our chorus’ website to a WordPress installation. We have a large number of practice tracks that need to be linked on a repertoire page.
WP’s built in media-linking is cumbersome, to say the least, and I don’t really want or need a player.
Your plugin looks ideal. I mean really perfect. But it doesn’t have an audio tab, only images. Is there a workaround? Or if not, do you know of a plug-in that does what I am looking for?
    Thanks!

    • maymond Post author

I actually hadn’t thought of adding audio, or video for that matter and the whole impetus for creating the plugin was the unfortunate lack of any good alternatives. If you don’t need the functionality immediately it is something I can add to the plugin easily enough. Either in a new A/V tab or by repurposing the Images tab into a new Media tab that includes images, audio and video.

  6. jmarcus

We are running WP 3.3.1. The plug-in version is version 1.6.2. It is a multi-site installation (2). I have no custom taxonomies that we created. However, I have a couple plug-ins like The Events Calendar and Media Categories that might be using custom taxonomies. (I’m not sure how I determine that.) I’d appreciate any suggestions for trying to pin down the problem.
Note: It was working at one time so the sudden error is fairly recent.

    • maymond Post author

Definitely sounds like a plugin collision problem. I would try turning off plugins one by one and see if that gets things working again. On my end I will take a look and see if there is anything I can find and come up with a more permanent solution. Thanks for the additional info.

  7. Keithcurtis

Thank you for the immediate response! I am not in dire need of the capability at this moment, but it is a project I am reluctant to undertake with WordPress’ default linking capabilities. When you do have time to add it I shall be able to start in earnest. Thank you again.

    • maymond Post author

Just pushed a new version of the plugin with a Media tab that lists everything in the Media Library not already displayed under Documents and Images.

      • Keithcurtis

Heh. How about this for coincidence. Just this morning I decided to go ahead and brute-force the project. I finished about an hour before your comment posted.
Nevertheless, thank you; I shall update. it will certainly make it easier going forward as we add new content. 🙂

When I got the latest version of WordPress and the most recent version of Link to My Content, I can’t find the counter anymore whereas there used to be one and I could see, at least, the number of downloads that went through the link.
    Is the counter available anymore?

    Thanks a bunch!

    • maymond Post author

There was never a counter built into the plugin itself though it may have somehow tied into other functionality from a separate plugin or WordPress. Where were you seeing the counter?

  9. KIm McLean

In the previous version of either WordPress or Link to your content, Clicking the links from the; sidebar/settings/Link to your content, went to a more expansive view, a control panel, than the options which is all I see there now. In the previous version, the control panel, you could see thumbnails of the jpegs on the site; there was a field that showed how many times my one image had been downloaded. The last time I saw it, re read 198. Thanks and regards,

    • maymond Post author

Thats definitely not my plugin. The only settings page that has ever been there is the current one. Kinda makes me wish I had built something like that into it though. What other plugins are you using?

  10. KIm McLean_2

Additional comment: Also, in the previous version of either WordPress or LTYC,
downloads from the site went directly to a computer via the download manager and were unzipped from there. In the recent version the download happens, but to get it into your computer, you have to manually right click/control click on the image and save it to the download folder..it’s not as streamlined as it used to be. Thanks for your time an response.

    Hi,

I am using WP 3.5.1 and was able to use your plugin
Link Your Content on a post but not on a page.

Someone earlier mentions what happens, I click on the pen/paper icon and the program begins and then goes away without allowing me to link to a file.

    Best,

    Lori

    • maymond Post author

      Lori,

Just to rule out something easy, because we all do it from time to time, when you are trying to create the link on a page do you have the text that you want to turn into the link highlighted first?

Outside of that, can you let me know what browser you are using so I can try and recreate the behavior you are seeing.

      Thanks.

LtYC is a great little tool, but…

It does not work with images! It used to, it think, but in WP 3.6.1 page editor when I select an image I have inserted an then klick the LtYC button, nothing happens (in fact, the LtYC window comes up for 1 sec, but without any content, then it closes).
Everything works fine when I select text and then hit the LtYC button…

Is it a bug? Is something wrong with my WP system (everything else works fine, though)? It would be so great if LtYC worked for linking images, too 🙂

    Thanks…

  14. Renee

Great tool. It sort of works with WordPress 3.9 on a Mac. But showing the content multiple times. Are you still updating this plugin? I can translate it into Dutch if you want.

    • maymond Post author

I am still updating the plugin, just slower than I would like unfortunately. I have pieces in place for a 3.9 compatibility update that I want to get out soon. And I would love a Dutch translation, just email me at wp@maymond.com and I’ll get you the necessary files. Thanks.

I love your plugin, sure makes things a lot easier.
I’ve been using it for a while now, but noticed only recently that once you select ether Post, Pages, Doc, etc tab, you can not advance to the other pages within that selected tab.
As a side note, I’ve noticed that the little icon does not appear on the edit page.
    Thank you again.

    • maymond Post author

Glad you like it. For the easy question, if you don’t already have version 1.8.1 installed that will clear up the icon issue. If you do have the plugin up to date then you will unfortunately have to delete and reinstall it. I’ve been meaning to write up a quick post about that, that was an SVN fail on my part.

As for the the other issue, I was able to replicate what you are seeing on one of the tabs so I will look more into it and see what I can do to get a fix out soon.

      Thanks.
